How do I find jobs that match my CV?
Search by the work you have done, not the job title you held. Titles vary wildly between companies, so keyword search on a title misses roles you would get and surfaces roles you would not. Match on skills, seniority and domain instead, then check the requirements against your last two roles.
Why title search fails
The same job is called Product Engineer at one company, Full Stack Engineer at another and Member of Technical Staff at a third. Searching a title filters on a naming convention rather than on the work.
It fails in both directions. You miss roles you would be a strong candidate for because the title is unfamiliar, and you waste time on roles that share your title but expect a different job entirely.
Search on the things that actually transfer
- Skills and tools you have used in anger, not ones you have read about.
- Seniority, expressed as scope and ownership rather than years.
- Domain, because fintech to fintech moves are far easier than fintech to games.
- Company stage, since a 20-person startup and a 20,000-person company want different people.
Read the requirements before the title
Most postings list requirements far above what the job needs, because the list is aspirational. Treat the first three bullets as real and the rest as a wish list.
If you meet the first three and the work sounds like something you have done, apply. Waiting until you match every bullet means never applying.
