What are the best alternatives to LinkedIn and Indeed?
The best alternative is not another aggregator, it is the company's own careers page. If you want boards, Welcome to the Jungle, Wellfound and the monthly Hacker News hiring thread carry roles the big two bury. A niche board for your field usually beats any general one.
What is actually wrong with the big two
Not coverage. Between them they list almost everything, and that is the problem. Volume means duplicates, reposts, listings scraped from other aggregators, and roles that were filled weeks ago but never taken down.
One-click applying makes it worse in both directions. You apply faster, and so does everyone else, so a posting that would have drawn forty applications draws six hundred.
Boards worth using instead
- The company careers page, which is where the posting was written and where the date is real.
- Welcome to the Jungle, formerly Otta, which asks what you want and ranks rather than keyword matches.
- Wellfound for early stage startups, where founders often screen directly.
- Work at a Startup for Y Combinator companies.
- The Hacker News hiring thread on the first weekday of each month, unfiltered and searchable in one page.
- A vertical board for your field. Almost every profession has one, and it will have a tenth of the listings and a much higher hit rate.
Where LinkedIn is still the right tool
For finding people rather than postings. If you want to know who runs the team you would join, who left recently, or who could refer you, nothing else has the coverage.
Large employers also genuinely post there first, because their recruiting is built around it. Dropping LinkedIn entirely costs you those roles. Use it for research and for big companies, and source elsewhere for everything else.
How we do it
We are not another aggregator. We read the applicant tracking systems of a curated list of companies directly and match what we find against your CV, so the list you get is sourced from employers rather than scraped from boards that scrape each other.
